Upcoming Events

All programs at Sovern are offered on a donation-based, pay-what-you-can model. Instead of fixed ticket prices, we provide suggested donation levels that help sustain the space and honor the time, labor, and expertise of our practitioners and facilitators.

If you are able to give at a higher level, your contribution helps make it possible for others in our community to attend who may not be able to contribute financially at this time. If you need to give less, you are welcome here exactly as you are.

Our programs are made possible through a combination of community donations and grants, and we are committed to keeping our offerings accessible.

No one will be turned away for lack of funds.

We trust our community to give in a way that reflects both their capacity and their care for the collective.

A note on accessibility: Sovern LA is committed to creating a space that is welcoming and accessible to all. At this time, our building does not have ramps, which limits physical access for some community members. We recognize this as an area that needs improvement and are actively working toward making the space more accessible. We do our best to accommodate people of varying abilities and encourage anyone with specific access needs to reach out before attending so we can support you as best we can.

Layered Grounds: Marbling Surfaces for Drawing and CollageOr

A hands-on workshop that brings together paper marbling, silkscreen, collage, and drawing. Artist Jessica Taylor Bellamy will prepare sheets silkscreened with imagery from the city and her practice, offering participants a playful starting point to marble, layer, cut, fold, and sketch on to for an interesting starting point to draw on. Paper Marbling, Silkscreens, Collage, make an interesting ground for drawing or printing or share parts of what you’ve made with others to make collaborative work.

JTB will pre silkscreen on to ⅓ of the sheets in order to let people collage and layer with the paper marbling. Encourage drawing or sketching on top, cutting, folding, gluing or just enjoying intuitive color works with paper marbling.

This workshop is part of the programming for our current show, Into The Plursiverse

Jessica Taylor Bellamy (she/her) is an artist of juxtapositions: image and text, abstraction and figuration, handmade and mass produced, reality and fantasy, sunshine and noir. A native Angeleno, born and raised in Whittier to an Ashkenazi Jewish mother and an Afro-Cuban father, Bellamy’s practice considers this particular familial history to address notions of home, homeland, and landscape. The artist’s work is rooted in her observations living at the edge of a precarious paradise of shifting ecological tensions.

Mending the Salt Bone: a Black Food Futurism Participatory Performance and Tasting

Mending the Salt Bone: a Black Food Futurism Participatory Performance and Tasting

Coined by Lee, Black Food Futurism is a radical artistic and culinary practice. With "Mending the Salt Bone: A Black Food Futurism Participatory Performance and Tasting", Lee continues the expansion of her practice into immersive sculpture, creating a site where food, spirit, and community converge. As part of the installation participants will encounter an interactive tasting that activates the work and invites participants to experience food as a springboard for collective dreaming.

The evening will feature a public conversation tracing the emergence of Black Food Futurism as both theory and practice. Together, these offerings invite audiences to consider how food can function simultaneously as an archive, altar, and dream mapping tool capable of carrying memory across timelines while seeding new worlds.

This workshop is part of the programming for our current show, Into The Plursiverse

Nia Lee is an award winning conceptual culinary artist and facilitator. Her work invites participants into collective acts of
wonder, memory, and reimagining, often using food as a portal for spiritual and philosophical inquiry. Their work has been featured in The Los Angeles Times, The Cut, Thrillist, Vogue, and more. Nia also appeared on Netflix’s James Beard–nominated docuseries High on the Hog and the James Beard Award–winning podcast Black Kitchen Series.

Sacred Closing Reception
May

Sacred Closing Reception

Join us for the closing reception of sacred, a group exhibition curated by Naomi Stewart, featuring an artist panel with select participating artists.

Rooted in questions of reverence, resilience, and self-definition, sacred invites us to consider what it means to embody the sacred within the Black soul while navigating white-body supremacy and generational trauma. Throughout the exhibition, the artists have offered pathways toward healing through practices that alchemize grief, embrace rest, and center creativity as a site of resistance.

This closing gathering offers space to be in conversation with the curator and exhibiting artists, reflecting on the exhibition’s themes and the role of art in cultivating self-fortitude and collective care. Together, we will explore how reclaiming reverence for body, history, and spirit can shape new possibilities for protest, healing, and imagination.

Throughout the run of sacred, join its curator for an opportunity engage in open conversation about the exhibition and its themes.

Throughout the run of sacred, the curator, Naomi Stewart, will hold office hours twice a month at Sovern, offering visitors an opportunity to engage in open conversation about the exhibition and its themes. Whether encountering the work for the first time or returning for a deeper look, office hours are an invitation to slow down, ask questions, and sit with what it means to view ourselves as sacred. A brief curator-led walkthrough will begin at 12:00 p.m., followed by an open conversation.

Naomi Stewart is a Los Angeles-based independent curator, consultant, and poet, and founder of Black in Place LLC. She holds a BA in Anthropology with a concentration in Art History from Hawaii Pacific University and an MBA in Leadership from Pepperdine University.
