THE FISH GETS TO SWIM:
assertions of freedom
December 2, 2022 - February 3, 2023
A two woman show featuring Dara M. Wilson and Fernanda Martinez
Exploring the possibilities that arise when we listen to our inner wisdom above the judgment of external forces, THE FISH GETS TO SWIM offers bold and vibrant statements of artistic freedom with the hopes that the viewer too will make moves in alignment with their own unique inner guidance.
Dara M. Wilson
"In my work, I consider the pricelessness of agency in a world overridden with despair. I contemplate our relationship to work, and how we might redefine it. I assert the possibility of clarity, freedom, humor, and joy. And as a disabled queer Black woman, I assert the audacity to claim these for myself."
Raised in Philadelphia and based in LA, She capped her formal studies with undergraduate degrees in psychology and studio art from Harvard University, where she worked in photography and videography. She put art on the back burner in favor of the supposed safety of the corporate ladder, but returned to the discipline after a weaving workshop offered through one of those jobs. What followed was a journey of creation and exploration that helped her heal from the ruinous nature of that world. Now she uses a unique blend of transformational coaching and design concepting to create beautiful pieces that memorialize her clients’ healing breakthroughs.

Fernanda Martinez is a painter and muralist from Mexico City and based in Oakland. She creates colorful and expressive abstract paintings, drawn intuitively from her memories and observations of nature. Martinez sees the paintings as emerging from a joyful dialogue in which shapes and color work together to convey a sense of depth and feeling. Color plays a central role in bringing the works to life and achieving a sense of wholeness. Martinez’s most recent body of work features large scale paintings that are fluid and dynamic, evoking intimacy, expansion, growth, and life energy.
Having collaborated with brands such as Anthropologie, Lulu and Georgia, World Market, Martinez's pieces are unique statements that represent feelings of connection, expansion and growth.
