Capoeira Angola is an Afro-Brazilian art form that weaves together movement, music, history, and community. Rooted in traditions created by Africans in Brazil, it blends a sometimes low-to-the-ground, sometimes standing playful physical dialogue with live percussion, call-and-response songs, and ritual. More than a martial art, Capoeira Angola is a practice of rhythm, strategy, expression, and collective care—inviting everyone to explore creativity, connection, and resistance through embodied movement. In this class we will learn how to play the instruments, how to sing the songs, and we will explore the movements in a manner that is engaging, beginner friendly and also challenging for more experienced participants. Shoes recommended.

Jasper Jordan was born and raised in Pasadena and Altadena and has practiced Capoeira Angola since 2003. In 2024, he received the title of Treinel (advanced student) from Mestre (Master and Teacher of Capoeira Angola) Roberval. Jasper has taught Capoeira Angola to children, youth, and adults in communities around the world—from Palestine, Jordan to Washington, DC. His teaching centers Capoeira Angola as an embodied, trauma-informed practice grounded in critical consciousness, cultural memory, and collective liberation.

A note on accessibility: Sovern LA is committed to creating a space that is welcoming and accessible to all. At this time, our building does not have ramps, which limits physical access for some community members. We recognize this as an area that needs improvement and are actively working toward making the space more accessible. We do our best to accommodate people of varying abilities and encourage anyone with specific access needs to reach out before attending so we can support you as best we can.
